Wallpaper Murals – The Art Form of Blending Classic With Contemporary

Since time immemorial, the innate artist in man has been deriving satisfaction by using almost everything around him as a canvas. In numerous archeological findings are being discovered every now and then, unearthing the artistic tendencies of prehistoric men. They are found as artful drawings and engravings on antique cavern walls and roofs as well as even on stones. However, it is no wonder that the modern man is after discovering other means to publicize his skill of art.

A mural is a painting or any other art form that is expressed on a wall. Traditionally, wall murals were an elite form of art sought as an indulgence for those elite few with excess time and excess money. The painters in the past, having some skill in the art form, would generally seek the patronage of nobility to maintain themselves in the arena. Thus, to keep the patrons happy, they either would create murals of their own or would simply transfer some classic art piece on the walls of wealthy masters.

As the times changed, so did the concept of art. Nowadays, artists seek to gain acclaim for their work by bringing it into the public’s eye. The wall murals and wallpaper murals used today are an expression of liberation from the closed walls of chateaus and castles into the free man’s infinite world of reality.

Classical Mural Techniques

Historically, the following techniques have been applied consistently to wall murals:

1. Fresco style involved the application of paint on the plaster on walls, ceilings, etc.

2. Buon fresco method used the direct application of pigmented water on fresh lime or plaster for a durable wall mural.

3. Another technique is Fresco-secco, which is done on dried plaster thus requiring egg, oil or glue as binding agents.

4. Mezzo-fresco, popular during the 16th century, was a slight adjustment to the Buon-fresco technique; it required the plaster to be partially dry before the paint could be applied on it, allowing less absorption and brighter colors.

Digitalized Murals

Like in any other field, technology has largely replaced the hand-painted or airbrushed murals with digitally developed murals. The graphics conceived by the artists are incorporated into the ones outlined by the customers with ample room for customization during the production. The murals thus generated fall into the category of wallpaper murals that are a more portable and durable form of wall murals.

Depending on the taste, space and size of budget, modern murals can be customized.
